Tarmac / Bitumen Driveway

Tarmac / Bitumen Driveway

Cleaning a tarmac drive or just removing moss from tarmac really shouldn't be a job that fills you with fear, costs you a lot of money or causes damage to your tarmac.

Tarmac driveways and paths whilst looking great, and being extremely functional, can be breeding grounds for moss, lichen & algae. The surface is very rough in its construction which is great for new moss growth to start growing on the surface and for retaining an amount of moisture.  This moisture provides the 'food' that the moss requires a well as the uneven surface providing protection for the moss and spores.

There are a number of ways to kill moss on these areas depending upon the way that you wish to work.  However, as with many other processes, the work should be relatively light all you really need to do is to allow the products to do their job.

Before you do any treatments we recommend that you should brush the area, preferably with a good stiff brush, to remove as much dirt and loose growth as possible. Our WIRE BROOM is especially good for this job but we have a SELECTION OF BRUSHES that will help you to clean your tarmac surface.  If your tarmac has weeds then ideally a WEEDKILLER should be applied.

Given the nature of the surface you have two options when it comes to the cleaning:

Option 1
After brushing your tarmac, spray the area with HIGH POWER SURFACE CLEANER - Batifort. This should be left on the surface for between 15-30 minutes. After which the area should be washed with either a hosepipe and brushed or, ideally, a SMALL pressure washer. The rinsing process is required to not only rinse away the product but also removes the dead moss from the surface. This method is especially effective when surfaces become slippery during the winter months as the Batifort gets deep into the surface to ensure all of the moss / algae growth is dead and can be rinsed away. Batifort also makes the cleaning of the surface easier and you will find that once rinsed the surface has retained much of its original colour.

Once the area has been cleaned, and is dry, we advice the application of CONCENTRATED MOSS & ALGAE KILLER - Baticlean CR.  Baticlean CR will kill any remaing moss on your tarmac but will also kill spores and should not be rinsed from the surface therefore provides protection against re-growth of moss.

Option 2
Once you have brushed the surface of your tarmac to remove as much moss as you can, simply spray the area with CONCENTRATED MOSS & ALGAE KILLER (Baticlean CR).  As with the previous option, Baticlean CR will kill moss on tarmac as well as the spores and is then designed to be left upon the surface where it can inhibit re-growth. Batimoss CR should only be sprayed on to a DRY surface.

Which option is best for you?  How to get get moss off tarmac depends upon how much moss you have on your tarmac.  If your tarmac area has very little growth or is mainly just starting to change colour and is now looking more green than black then option 2 would probably be the better route.  Always apply BATICLEAN CR to a dry surface and on a dry day.  We feel that Baticlean CR is the best moss killer for tarmac as it is very effective and requires no rinsing but best used on lighter growth as opposed to heavy moss growth.  If you have heavy moss on tarmac then option 1 should be followed.  The initial brushing is very important as it will save you money and make your moss killing quicker.  By removing the heaviest moss growth before any treatment you will reduce the amount of moss killer that you will have to use therefore making the task quicker and easier.

You should always try and keep the area clean and remove leaves and anything that causes shade across the area especially during the winter months. Brushing the surface occasionally will help and does take too much effort.

In addition to this you can treat it every 10 - 14 months simply brush the surface and, on a dry day, apply a new coat of CONCENTRATED MOSS & ALGAE KILLER - Baticlean CR or just wait until the first signs of new growth appear before applying a new coat.
